Why Are My Apples Cracking at the Skin?
Apple skin that splits, cracks or develops irregular fissures — either a single deep crack running from the calyx to the stem, fine surface russeting that becomes cracked, or scattered radial cracks near the calyx end — indicates that the fruit flesh has expanded faster than the skin could accommodate. This happens when a period of slow or stalled growth (often during a dry spell) is followed by a sudden flush of water uptake and rapid fruit expansion. The skin, which has already thickened and lost some elasticity during the dry period, cannot stretch to match the sudden growth and splits.
Irregular watering — the most common cause
The classic cracking scenario: a dry summer spell dries the soil and slows fruit development, the skin hardens. Then heavy rain or irrigation suddenly rehydrates the tree and the fruit expands rapidly — the hardened skin splits. Consistent soil moisture prevents this. Mulch to a depth of 5–8 cm around the tree (keeping mulch away from the trunk) to moderate soil moisture fluctuations. During dry spells, water deeply and regularly rather than lightly and often, to maintain steady moisture in the root zone.
Calcium deficiency
Calcium is a structural component of cell walls in fruit skin and flesh. Low calcium levels in developing fruit produce a weaker, less elastic skin that is more prone to cracking as well as the bitter pit disorder. Foliar calcium sprays (calcium nitrate or calcium chloride) applied from fruitlet stage at two-week intervals through fruit development significantly improve skin strength and reduce cracking in calcium-deficient situations.
Susceptible varieties and late-season cracking
Some varieties are inherently more prone to cracking than others — Cox, for example, cracks more readily than Bramley in variable weather. Cracking is most common in the final two to three weeks before harvest when the fruit is at maximum size and the skin is under greatest tension. Harvest promptly when ready rather than leaving ripe fruit on the tree through autumn rain events.
