How Do I Overwinter Artichoke Plants Successfully?

Artichokes are perennials that can survive UK winters if their crowns are protected from waterlogging and severe frost. The overwintering process is simple — cut back the dead stems, apply a protective mulch, ensure drainage is adequate — but getting each step right makes the difference between a plant that returns vigorously in spring and one that rots silently over winter and never reappears.

Step 1: Cut back the stems in late autumn

After the first frosts have killed off the foliage (typically November in the UK), cut all stems back to 15–20 cm above the crown. Do not cut lower — leaving some stem stub above the crown provides slight protection and a visible marker of where the crown is. Remove all cut material from the site. Do not leave dead foliage lying around the crown — it traps moisture and encourages grey mould.

Step 2: Apply a dry mulch over the crown

Apply 10–15 cm of dry straw, bracken, wood chip or composted bark over the crown to insulate and keep rain off the crown tissue. Do not use fresh, wet materials — these create the cold, wet conditions that cause rot rather than preventing it. The mulch should be dry and airy, not compacted. Hold it in place with a loose layer of horticultural fleece or a cloche if very exposed positions are involved.

Step 3: Check drainage

Before winter arrives, check that water does not pool around the crown after rain. If it does, improve drainage now — add grit to the surrounding soil, create a low mound around the crown, or dig a simple drainage channel to divert water away. This is the most important single action for crown survival.

Step 4: Remove mulch in spring

In March, remove the mulch to allow the crown to warm up and new shoots to emerge freely. If the mulch is left on too long after growth begins, the emerging shoots can become etiolated (pale and weak) under it, and the humid conditions encourage grey mould on the emerging growth.
