Why Are My Bean Seedlings So Slow to Emerge?
Bean seeds that have been sown correctly — at the right depth, in moist but not waterlogged soil — but are taking far longer than expected to show above the surface are almost certainly germinating in cooler-than-ideal conditions. At the minimum viable soil temperature of around 10–12°C, beans germinate very slowly — sometimes taking three weeks or more to push through the surface. This extended time in the soil also increases the risk of rot. Knowing the expected germination times at different temperatures helps you judge whether to wait or to investigate.
Expected germination times by temperature
At 10°C (the absolute minimum): 18–25 days, high rot risk. At 12°C: 14–18 days, moderate. At 15°C: 10–14 days, reliable. At 18°C: 7–10 days, fast. At 20–22°C: 5–8 days, optimal. These are soil temperatures, not air temperatures — soil warms slowly and may be several degrees cooler than air temperature in spring. A soil thermometer is a worthwhile investment for bean growers who want to sow early. Push it 5 cm into the soil (the sowing depth) and read at 9 am for the most relevant measurement.
Checking whether germination has started
If seeds have been in the ground for 14 days and nothing has emerged, gently dig at one end of the row with a finger and examine a seed. A germinating seed will have a visible white root tip (radicle) and possibly a curved shoot (hypocotyl) beginning to push upward — it just has not yet reached the surface. This seed is fine; wait another five to seven days. A firm, unchanged seed with no radicle has not yet started germinating — the soil is probably too cold. A soft, discoloured seed has rotted.
Helping slow seedlings along
Covering the sown row with a cloche, tunnel, or sheet of clear polythene raised on wire hoops traps heat and can raise soil temperature by 2–4°C, significantly accelerating germination in marginal spring conditions. Remove the cover as soon as seedlings emerge to prevent overheating. Watering with slightly warm (not hot) water rather than cold tap water in cool weather makes a noticeable difference to the immediate soil temperature around seeds.
