Why Are My Beetroot Leaves Pale and Weak?

Beetroot plants with a generally pale, washed-out, or yellowish-green appearance — lacking the deep green of healthy foliage and the vibrant red-green colour of well-grown leaves — are failing to synthesise adequate chlorophyll. This affects both the aesthetic and the function of the plant, since pale leaves photosynthesise less efficiently, resulting in slower root development. The most common causes are nitrogen deficiency, iron or manganese deficiency in alkaline soils, and insufficient light — each produces a slightly different pattern of pallor.

Nitrogen deficiency — general pallor

Uniform, whole-plant paleness in beetroot is most often nitrogen deficiency, particularly on light, sandy soils or in wet seasons that leach nutrients. Beetroot is a moderately heavy nitrogen feeder, especially in the early growing stages. Prepare soil with good garden compost before sowing, and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks once plants are 10 cm tall. Avoid high-nitrogen-only products, which promote leafy growth at the expense of root development.

Boron deficiency — young leaves pale and distorted

Boron deficiency is specific and common in beetroot. It causes the young, central leaves to be pale, distorted, and crinkled — not just uniformly pale — and later causes the classic symptom of "heart rot" (black internal root tissue). Boron deficiency occurs most commonly on light, sandy soils with pH above 7.0, and on soils recently limed. Apply a foliar spray of borax (sodium borate) dissolved at 35 g per 11 litres of water, one application per season. Do not exceed the dose — boron is micronutrient that becomes toxic in excess.

Interveinal chlorosis — magnesium

Yellow between green veins on older leaves is magnesium deficiency — apply Epsom salts foliar spray at 20 g per litre of water. Pale new growth with green veins is iron or manganese deficiency in alkaline soil — apply chelated iron as a foliar spray. Both respond quickly to foliar application, bypassing the soil chemistry problem temporarily while longer-term pH management is addressed.
