How and When Should I Feed Cantaloupe Melons?

Feeding cantaloupe melons at the right time with the right nutrients has a direct impact on fruit size and sweetness. Melons are moderately hungry plants that benefit from regular liquid feeding once they are established, but the type of feed needs to change as the season progresses — nitrogen to build the plant in early growth, potassium to support fruit development and sugar accumulation as the fruit swells. Using high-nitrogen feed throughout the season produces leafy plants with watery, bland fruit.

Soil preparation before planting

Dig in a generous amount of well-rotted garden compost or manure before planting. Melons do well in rich, moisture-retentive soil. In containers, use a high-quality compost blend with some slow-release fertiliser incorporated at planting. This background fertility supports early growth without the need for intense supplementary feeding in the first few weeks.

Early season feeding

Begin liquid feeding two to three weeks after transplanting, once the plant is growing away strongly. Use a balanced general-purpose liquid fertiliser or seaweed extract every ten to fourteen days. The goal at this stage is to support healthy leaf and stem production. If growth is very vigorous and the compost is rich, you may not need supplementary feeding at all during this phase — watch the plant rather than feeding to a rigid schedule.

Switching to high-potassium feed

Once the first fruits have been pollinated and begin to swell, switch to a high-potassium tomato fertiliser applied weekly. Continue this through the fruiting and ripening period. Reduce feeding frequency in the final two weeks before expected harvest — this, combined with reduced watering, allows the plant to concentrate sugars naturally without the diluting effect of continued vigorous uptake. Stopping feeding entirely in the last two weeks before harvest is a common practice among experienced melon growers.
