Can I Grow Cantaloupe Melons in Containers?

Cantaloupe melons can be grown successfully in large containers — this is actually one of the standard approaches for growing melons in a greenhouse where border soil may be infected with disease or of poor quality. Container growing also allows you to position the plants in the warmest available spot on a patio or in a polytunnel and to control the growing medium exactly. The trade-off is higher management demands: containers dry out quickly, need more frequent watering and feeding, and the plant's root space is limited.

Container and compost selection

Use a large, sturdy container with adequate drainage holes. Fill with a rich, moisture-retentive growing medium — a blend of peat-free multipurpose compost and well-rotted garden compost or manure, with slow-release fertiliser granules mixed in. Place the container in full sun, ideally in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Raising the container slightly on feet or blocks improves drainage and prevents waterlogging.

Watering container melons

Container-grown melons need careful attention to watering — the restricted compost volume dries out quickly in warm weather. Check daily in summer and water whenever the compost is dry 2–3 cm below the surface. Water thoroughly so it drains from the bottom — this ensures the whole rootball is wetted rather than just the surface. Reduce watering significantly in the final two to three weeks before harvest to concentrate sugars in the fruit.

Training container melons vertically

In a greenhouse, train the container melon up a cane or string tied to the structure above. Pinch the main growing tip after five to six leaves and train the resulting lateral shoots horizontally. Aim for two to three fruits per plant — more than this overtaxes a container-grown plant. Support each developing fruit in a small net or sling tied to the training structure. Regular liquid feeding with high-potassium tomato feed from flowering onward is essential for container plants, which exhaust their growing medium's nutrients faster than border-grown plants.
