Can I Grow Cantaloupe Melons Successfully Outdoors?

Growing cantaloupe melons outdoors is possible in temperate climates, but it is a more uncertain endeavour than growing them under glass. Melons need a long, warm growing season to ripen their fruit fully — typically at least three months of reliably warm, sunny weather from transplanting to harvest. In climates with reliable summers (southern England, continental Europe, and similar), outdoor melons can do very well in a good year. In cooler or cloudier climates, a warm microclimate, early planting, and the right variety selection are essential.

Site and soil preparation

Choose the warmest, most sheltered, and sunniest spot available — a south-facing border against a wall that radiates heat is ideal. Prepare the ground by digging in a generous quantity of well-rotted compost or manure to improve moisture retention and fertility. Growing through black polythene mulch film warms the soil significantly (by up to 5°C), suppresses weeds, and retains moisture — lay it several weeks before planting to allow the soil to warm. Cut planting holes in the film for each plant.

Using cloches and covers

Covering young plants with cloches or horticultural fleece through May and into June extends the warm season significantly. Remove covers when the plants need to be pollinated by insects. In cooler areas, draping fleece lightly back over the plants in the evenings as autumn approaches can extend the ripening period by two to three weeks — enough to make the difference between ripe and unripe fruit in a marginal year.

Supporting and ripening outdoor fruits

Outdoor fruits rest on the soil — place each developing fruit on a tile or piece of wood to raise it off damp soil, reduce rot risk, and reflect heat upward into the fruit. As fruits approach ripeness, folding back some of the leaves to allow direct sunlight onto the fruits accelerates ripening. A plastic cloche placed over each fruit in cool, cloudy spells provides additional warmth to help the final ripening stage complete before the end of the season.
