How Do I Stop Slugs Damaging My Cantaloupe Melon Plants?
Slugs pose two distinct threats to cantaloupe melons at different points in the growing season. Young seedlings and newly transplanted plants are vulnerable to overnight slug attack, which can destroy a plant entirely. Later in the season, as fruits ripen and their skins soften slightly, slugs may chew into ripe or near-ripe fruits sitting on the soil surface. Targeting protection at both these stages gives the best results.
Protecting young transplants
Fit plastic bottle cloches (the bottom third of a 2-litre bottle pushed into the soil around each plant) to give overnight protection in the first two to three weeks after transplanting. Nematode biological control (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) applied to moist soil two weeks before transplanting reduces slug numbers in the soil. Copper tape around the edge of raised beds or individual pot rims gives persistent deterrence. Removing debris, stones, and anything that provides daytime shelter for slugs near the planting area reduces the local population.
Protecting ripening fruits
Melons that ripen directly on bare soil are accessible to slugs at ground level. Lift developing fruits off the soil surface using a tile, a piece of wood, or a small net bag suspended from the vine training system. This keeps the fruit dry, improves air circulation around it, reduces rot risk, and makes it much less accessible to ground-dwelling slugs. Checking under and around fruits in the evening and removing slugs by hand is also effective.
Reducing slug pressure generally
In persistently wet seasons, slug pressure can be severe. Watering in the morning rather than evening reduces surface moisture at night. Rough-cultivating the soil before planting exposes slug eggs to predators. Encouraging hedgehogs, frogs, ground beetles, and birds in the garden builds natural slug control over the long term. Ferric phosphate pellets are the safest molluscicide option for use around food crops — they are harmless to mammals, birds, and beneficial invertebrates.
