How Should I Water Cantaloupe Melons?
Watering cantaloupe melons correctly is one of the most critical factors in producing sweet, well-ripened fruit. Unlike many vegetables where consistent moisture at all growth stages is the simple rule, melons actually benefit from a specific watering regime that changes as the fruits approach maturity. Getting this right — particularly reducing water in the final weeks — concentrates the sugars in the flesh and produces the sweet, fragrant flavour that a properly grown cantaloupe should have.
Watering after transplanting
Water transplants in thoroughly at planting and then every two to three days for the first two weeks, checking that the soil or compost remains moist but not wet. Once plants are established and growing vigorously, allow the compost surface to partially dry between waterings rather than keeping it constantly wet. Waterlogged compost leads quickly to crown rot — the base of the stem collapses and the plant dies.
During vine growth and flowering
As the plant produces its main framework of vines and leaves through June and July, keep moisture consistent. Water deeply at the base of the plant, never wetting the crown or leaves. In a greenhouse, water in the morning so the foliage and soil surface dry before nightfall — wet conditions overnight encourage fungal diseases. Aim for moist but not saturated compost or soil throughout the vegetative and flowering period.
Reducing water as fruits ripen
Once the fruits are fully sized and beginning to change colour or netted pattern, reduce watering significantly. In greenhouse cultivation, many growers stop watering almost entirely in the final two weeks before harvest, giving only enough water to prevent wilting. This water reduction stresses the plant slightly and triggers sugar accumulation in the fruit — the same technique used commercially to produce intensely sweet melons. Do not cut off water entirely or the fruit may crack; the goal is controlled reduction, not complete drought.
