What Type of Compost Bin Should I Use?
The type of compost system you choose should match how much material you produce, how much space you have, how quickly you want finished compost, and how much effort you are willing to put in. There is no single best option — a plastic council bin is fine for a small garden; a hot-composting wooden bay system suits a larger vegetable garden producing significant quantities of material. Understanding the trade-offs helps you choose correctly from the start rather than buying something that does not work for your situation.
Plastic dalek bins
The moulded plastic "dalek" compost bin is the most common type in UK gardens — often available cheaply from councils. It is fine for slow cold composting of kitchen and garden waste over 12–24 months. Its limitations are that it is too small for hot composting, difficult to turn the contents, and may dry out in summer. A good option for low-effort cold composting if you are not in a hurry. Position it directly on soil to allow drainage and access for worms from below.
Open wooden bay systems
A wooden compost bay — either a single large bay or a two or three-bay system — is the preferred option for more serious vegetable gardeners. A three-bay system is the classic: one bay for fresh material being added, one for active decomposition, and one holding finished compost ready to use. The open structure allows easy access for turning with a fork. A minimum size of 1 × 1 × 1 metre per bay is needed for effective composting. A simple wooden pallet bay costs almost nothing to build.
Compost tumblers
Rotating compost tumblers sit off the ground on a frame and are turned by rotating the drum. In theory they produce compost faster than static bins. In practice they are often too small, can be difficult to turn when full, and dry out rapidly in warm weather. They are more useful as a second-stage composter (adding pre-broken-down material from another bin) than as a primary system. Worth considering for gardens where pest access is a concern — their sealed, raised design deters rats.
