Why Seaweed Fertiliser Is One of the Best Garden Tonics You Can Use

Seaweed extract has been used on farms and gardens for centuries, and modern research has confirmed what coastal growers long suspected — it does things that other fertilisers simply do not. While its NPK values are modest, seaweed's real value lies in its extraordinary range of trace elements and bioactive compounds that improve plant health from the inside out.

What Seaweed Contains

Seaweed is a concentrated source of trace minerals including iodine, iron, zinc, manganese, boron and cobalt — elements that are often depleted from intensively cultivated soils but which plants need in small quantities for healthy enzyme function. It also contains naturally occurring cytokinins and auxins (plant growth hormones) that promote cell division, root growth and overall vigour. The polysaccharides in seaweed improve soil structure by helping bind particles together and encouraging microbial activity.

Forms of Seaweed Fertiliser

Seaweed products come in several forms, each suited to different uses:

How to Apply Liquid Seaweed

Most liquid seaweed concentrates are diluted at around 5–20 ml per litre of water — always check the label as concentration varies between products. Apply as a soil drench around the roots every two to four weeks through the growing season. For foliar application, spray in the early morning using the same dilution, making sure to coat both sides of the leaves. Seaweed is gentle enough to use on seedlings and young plants without risk of burning — it is one of the few fertilisers where a modest overdose is unlikely to cause problems.

Seaweed as a Supplement, Not a Main Feed

Seaweed extract is best thought of as a tonic and trace element supplement rather than a primary nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium feed. Use it alongside a main feeding programme, not instead of one. The combination of good soil preparation, a balanced primary fertiliser and regular seaweed applications gives plants the broadest nutritional support.
