Why Are There Brown Patches on My Pumpkin Leaves?
Angular yellow or brown patches on the upper leaf surface of pumpkins, with a corresponding grey or purple-grey fuzzy growth on the underside of the same patches, is downy mildew — distinct from the powdery white surface coating of powdery mildew, and distinct from nutrient-related leaf yellowing. Downy mildew of cucurbits spreads rapidly in cool, humid conditions and can defoliate plants in a matter of weeks if unmanaged.
Identifying cucurbit downy mildew
The upper leaf surface shows angular, irregularly-shaped yellow patches bounded by leaf veins — the angular shape is characteristic of downy mildew because the pathogen cannot cross leaf veins easily. Flip the leaf: the underside shows grey, brown or purplish fuzzy sporulation exactly corresponding to the yellow areas above. In humid conditions this sporulation is dense and obvious; in dry conditions it may be sparse or absent, making diagnosis harder.
How it spreads
Cucurbit downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis) spreads by airborne spores that require wet leaf surfaces to germinate and infect. It thrives in cool nights with warm days and high humidity — typical late summer and early autumn conditions in temperate climates. Overcrowded plantings with poor airflow and overhead irrigation that keeps foliage wet accelerate spread.
Managing an active infection
Remove all visibly affected leaves promptly — this reduces the spore load dramatically. Do not compost affected material. Switch to watering at the soil base rather than overhead. Copper-based fungicide spray applied preventively to the remaining healthy foliage can slow spread but will not cure existing infections. Continue to harvest fruits as they mature; the fruit quality is not directly affected by leaf infection but the plant's ability to continue developing fruit declines as leaf area is lost.
Prevention for next season
Give plants more space (at least 1.5m between plants) to improve airflow. Avoid overhead irrigation. Grow resistant varieties — many modern pumpkin and squash varieties have improved downy mildew tolerance. Remove all plant debris at the end of the season.
