Why Are My Pumpkin Leaves Curling Inward?
Pumpkin leaves that cup, roll or curl inward — particularly in the afternoon or during hot, dry weather — are usually responding to moisture stress. This is the plant's natural response to reduce the leaf surface area exposed to the sun, which limits water loss through transpiration. In many cases it is a temporary heat-stress response that reverses overnight and requires no intervention. In other cases it signals a problem that needs addressing.
Heat and drought stress — the benign cause
Leaves that curl during the hottest part of the day but flatten out again by evening or the next morning are simply managing heat load. Check the soil — if it is reasonably moist, no watering intervention is needed. The plant is self-regulating. If the soil is dry and the curling is persisting into the evening, water deeply and mulch the root zone to prevent a repeat.
Aphid damage
Aphid colonies on the underside of leaves and on young shoot tips cause the leaf tissue to pucker, distort and curl inward. Unlike heat curling, aphid-induced curl does not reverse with cooler temperatures. Check the underside of curled leaves carefully for dense colonies of small insects. Treat with insecticidal soap or water jets as described in the aphid entry.
Mosaic virus
Cucurbit mosaic virus causes the leaves to become distorted, puckered and curled with a mottled yellow-green colouring. The curl is often tight and combined with a blistered or bubbled appearance on the leaf surface. This is distinct from heat curling (no colour change) and aphid curling (insects present). There is no cure; remove affected plants if the infection is severe to prevent spread to other cucurbits.
Overwatering
Waterlogged soil can paradoxically cause the same curling symptoms as drought — roots that cannot access oxygen cannot supply water to leaves, leading to the same water-stress response. Check whether the soil is dry or waterlogged and respond accordingly. The two problems look similar above ground but need opposite treatments.
