Why Do My Pumpkin Leaves Have Yellow and Green Mottled Patches?
An irregular mosaic pattern of yellow, pale green and normal green on pumpkin leaves — particularly on young, developing leaves — is the classic symptom of cucurbit mosaic virus. Several different mosaic viruses affect the cucurbit family, including cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) and watermelon mosaic virus (WMV). All are spread by aphids and all produce similar symptoms: mottled leaves, often accompanied by distortion, blistering and reduced fruit quality.
How to identify mosaic virus
The mottling is most obvious on young leaves — the newer growth shows the clearest symptoms. Affected leaves are often smaller than normal, with a distorted, puckered or bubbled texture alongside the colour patterning. Fruit on infected plants may be mottled, small, warty or distorted in shape, or may develop internal discolouration. A plant that was producing normally but then shows sudden mottling of new leaves, with no other obvious pest or nutrient cause, has almost certainly contracted a virus.
Can infected plants still produce fruit?
Mildly infected plants that contracted the virus late in the season — after most fruit was already set — may still produce a reasonable harvest, though fruit quality is often reduced. Plants infected early in the season while still young rarely produce worthwhile harvests and are best removed to prevent aphids from spreading the virus further. When removing, bag and bin (not compost) immediately.
Managing the risk
There is no treatment for infected plants. The management strategy is entirely preventive: control aphid populations (see the aphid entry), encourage natural aphid predators, and use reflective silver mulch around plants to confuse incoming aphids. Buying certified virus-free seed and growing resistant varieties (increasingly available for squash and pumpkin types) reduces initial infection risk. Removing any weedy cucurbit relatives nearby eliminates reservoir hosts.
