Why Won't My Pumpkins Ripen Before the First Frost?

Pumpkins still showing green or immature colouring as September arrives — with frost forecast — are a race against the calendar that can be won if managed correctly. The most common cause of late ripening is sowing or planting too late, or a summer with fewer sunshine hours than usual. But a pumpkin that is fully grown but unripe can often be helped to ripen, and even if it cannot fully ripen on the vine, it can sometimes be finished indoors.

Cutting back leaves to let in light

In September, removing some of the older or most shaded leaves around developing fruits exposes them to more direct sunlight, which significantly speeds skin hardening and colour development. Do not remove more than a third of the plant's leaf area at once, but strategic removal of leaves shading the fruit can make a real difference in the final few weeks of the season.

Removing new fruits and flowers

Remove any new female flowers and small newly-set fruits that formed late in the season — these will never mature before frost and are diverting energy from the larger fruits that might. Pinching out growing tips on the main vine also redirects energy toward fruit rather than vine extension at this stage of the season.

Indoor ripening

A pumpkin that has not ripened by the time frost arrives can be harvested and ripened indoors if the skin is firm, the vine attachment has started to dry, and the fruit sounds hollow when tapped. Place it in a warm (25–30°C), dry, sunny location for 10–14 days. A south-facing window or a greenhouse bench is ideal. The skin will continue to harden and colour. Pumpkins ripened this way do not store as well as fully vine-ripened ones but are perfectly edible.

Next year — start earlier

Start seeds indoors in late April and transplant after the last frost date. In short-season climates, choose varieties with fewer days to maturity — many compact or smaller pumpkin varieties mature in 90–100 days rather than the 120+ of large varieties. Starting under cover rather than direct sowing adds several weeks to the effective growing season.
