How Do I Get Pumpkins to Mature in a Short Growing Season?

Growing pumpkins in climates with short summers — where the frost-free period is only four to five months — is entirely possible with the right approach. The key adjustments are choosing varieties with shorter days-to-maturity, starting seeds indoors rather than direct sowing, and using simple season-extension techniques to protect plants at each end of the season. None of this requires expensive equipment.

Choose short-season varieties

Traditional large Halloween-type pumpkins (Howden, Atlantic Giant) require 110–120 days to maturity. In a short season this is not achievable. Look for compact varieties that mature in 85–100 days: Jack Be Little (95 days), Baby Bear (105 days), and many smaller French and Italian heritage varieties. These have been specifically selected or bred to mature quickly. Smaller pumpkins also ripen more uniformly and are easier to cure and store.

Start indoors at the right time

Sow seeds indoors three to four weeks before the last expected frost date. In the UK this is typically late April to early May. Starting earlier creates leggy seedlings and does not meaningfully extend the season. Germinate in warmth (21–24°C) and grow on in the brightest available spot. Harden off thoroughly over 10–14 days before transplanting outside.

Warm the soil and protect early transplants

Lay black polythene mulch on the growing area two weeks before transplanting — it warms the soil by several degrees. Transplant through slits in the mulch. Cover transplants with cloches or fleece for the first two to three weeks after planting to protect from late frosts and to maintain warmth during cool nights. These two steps effectively add two to three weeks to the growing season.

End-of-season management

In September, remove leaves shading fruits, pinch out growing tips, and remove any new small fruits that will not mature. This redirects the plant's remaining energy into ripening what it has.
