Why Is My Pumpkin Vine Suddenly Dying?

A pumpkin vine that was growing vigorously and then collapses suddenly — with leaves wilting permanently rather than recovering overnight — has suffered a serious disruption to the internal water and nutrient transport system. This type of rapid, non-reversible collapse mid-season is different from normal heat wilting and requires immediate diagnosis. The three main causes are squash vine borer, Phytophthora crown rot, and bacterial wilt transmitted by cucumber beetles.

Squash vine borer

Common in North America, the vine borer moth lays eggs on the vine stem in early summer. The hatching larvae bore into the vine and feed on the internal tissue, eventually cutting the flow of water and nutrients. The entry point is marked by a small hole with sawdust-like frass nearby, usually near the base of the main stem. The vine wilts suddenly from the borer's feeding point toward the growing tip. To check: slit the stem near the entry point and look for white caterpillars inside. Remove larvae and mound soil over the cut section to encourage new roots to form.

Phytophthora crown and root rot

In wet conditions, Phytophthora causes rapid collapse starting at the crown (where the vine meets the soil). The stem tissue at and below soil level is soft, dark and water-soaked. This progresses quickly up the vine. There is no treatment — harvest any mature fruits immediately and improve drainage before planting in the same area again. Growing on a raised mound is the most effective prevention.

Bacterial wilt

Transmitted by spotted and striped cucumber beetles, bacterial wilt causes wilting that spreads vine by vine. A diagnostic test: cut the stem and touch the cut ends together — if stringy threads (bacterial ooze) stretch between them when pulled apart, bacterial wilt is confirmed. There is no cure; control cucumber beetle populations proactively and remove infected plants promptly.
