The Best Dwarf Sunflower Varieties for Pots and Small Spaces

Not everyone has room for a three-metre sunflower. The excellent news is that plant breeders have developed a wide range of compact dwarf varieties that pack enormous colour and charm into plants under 60 centimetres tall. These varieties are ideal for container growing, balconies, window boxes and front garden beds where a towering giant would look wildly out of place.

Teddy Bear

Teddy Bear is one of the most popular dwarf sunflowers ever bred. It stays at 40 to 60 centimetres and produces fully double flowers with a dense, pompom-like appearance — all golden petals with no visible central disc. It is a pollen-free variety, which makes it excellent for cut flowers (no pollen on tablecloths or clothing). Teddy Bear performs exceptionally well in containers, needing a minimum 10-litre pot. Its unusual double flower form is a consistent talking point and it is beloved by children.

Big Smile

Big Smile is a classic single-flowered dwarf reaching 40 to 50 centimetres, with a clear golden-yellow flower and brown central disc — exactly the look most people picture when they think of a sunflower, but in miniature. It is robust, free-flowering and reliable, making it a good choice for beginners and children growing their first sunflower. It takes approximately 60 days from germination to first flower.

Pacino

Pacino is a very compact branching variety that produces multiple flowers per plant on a 45-centimetre framework. The blooms are a warm butter-yellow and appear over a longer period than single-stemmed dwarfs, making it excellent for a long-lasting container display. It is also a pollen-free variety. Pacino performs well in 10 to 15 litre pots and is reliable enough to have won the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Sunspot

Sunspot is notable for producing a large, full-sized single flower head — up to 25 centimetres across — on a compact plant of only 50 to 60 centimetres. The contrast between the small plant and the enormous head is striking. It needs slightly more root space than smaller dwarfs — a 12 to 15 litre container is recommended. Sunspot is ideal where you want the impact of a classic giant sunflower head without the height.

Elf

For the very smallest spaces, Elf reaches only 30 to 35 centimetres. It produces a single clear yellow flower on a very compact plant that can be grown in pots as small as 8 litres. It matures quickly — approximately 55 to 65 days to flower — making it one of the most suitable varieties for late sowing when time in the growing season is limited. Useful for window boxes when other dwarf varieties might still be too tall.
