The Best Tall Sunflower Varieties for Garden Growing
Tall sunflowers have a drama that no other summer plant can match. A well-grown giant sunflower towering three metres above the border creates a focal point visible from the other end of the garden. Whether you are growing for the spectacle, for seed production, for children, or for competition, choosing the right variety is the first and most important step.
Russian Mammoth
Russian Mammoth is the most widely grown giant sunflower in the UK. It reliably reaches 2.5 to 3.5 metres in good conditions, with a single enormous golden-yellow flower head 30 to 45 centimetres across. Seeds are large and produced abundantly, making it an excellent choice for eating or bird feeding. It is one of the most forgiving giants to grow and performs well across a wide range of soils. Days to flowering: approximately 90 to 100. Pollen-bearing (important if you are growing for pollinators or seed saving).
Mongolian Giant
Similar in stature to Russian Mammoth but often cited as growing even taller in ideal conditions — claims of 4 to 5 metres are made regularly in competition growing circles. The head can reach 50 centimetres across in optimum conditions. Requires rich, deeply dug soil, consistent watering and generous spacing — 90 centimetres or more between plants. Not a variety to grow in a hurry or in difficult conditions, but spectacular when given what it needs.
Skyscraper
Skyscraper was bred specifically for height and consistently produces plants of 3 to 3.6 metres with very large, classic golden-yellow heads. It has become one of the most popular competition varieties. Stems are strong relative to other giants, making it more wind-resistant than some. Grown at wide spacing with adequate staking, it makes an outstanding display and excellent seed production.
Titan
Titan is frequently marketed as one of the largest-headed sunflowers available, with heads claimed at 60 centimetres across under competition conditions. In an average home garden expect heads of 35 to 45 centimetres. Plants reach 2.5 to 3 metres. The combination of a very heavy head and a tall stem means staking is essential — the plant can topple in summer storms if unsupported. Titan seeds are large and impressive when harvested and dried.
Growing Tips for Tall Varieties
All giant sunflower varieties share the same basic requirements. Prepare the soil deeply — at least 40 centimetres — incorporating generous compost. Sow at 90-centimetre spacing or more. Stake at planting time using a robust stake at least 2 metres tall. Water deeply during the bud initiation phase. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during vegetative growth, switching to a high-potassium feed at bud formation. Protect young seedlings from slugs, which can devastate a seedling that took weeks of careful growth to reach 15 centimetres tall.
